Sanskrit Subhashitam PART1

उद्यमेनैव सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथैः ।
न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः ।।
Meaning: Success in life can be achieved only by hard work and not by merely wishing for it. No animal will enter into the mouth of a lion that is sleeping.


न कश्चिदपि जानाति किं कस्य श्वो भविष्यति ।
अतः श्वः करणीयानि कुर्यादद्यैव बुद्धिमान् ।।
Meaning: Meaning: Nobody knows what will happen and to whom tomorrow. Hence a wise person should do today itself what is scheduled for tomorrow.


यान्ति न्यायप्रवृत्तस्य तिर्यञ्चोऽपि सहायताम् ।
अपन्थानं तु गच्छन्तं सोदरोऽपि विमुञ्चति ।।
Meaning: To him who proceeds along the righteous path even the animals give a helping hand. Even a brother deserts a person who takes to an unworthy path. This is related to the path of Rama and Ravana


सदयं ह्रदयं यस्य भाषितं सत्यभूषितम् ।
कायः परहिते यस्य कलिस्तस्य करोति किम् ।।
Meaning: What harm can Kalipurusha do to him, whose heart is full of kindness, whose speech is adorned with truth, and whose body is for the good of others


आचार्यात् पादमादत्ते पादं शिष्य स्वमेधया ।
पादं सब्रह्मचारिभ्यः पादं कालक्रमेण च ।।
Meaning: A student learns only a quarter from his teacher, acquires another quarter from his own intelligence, receives yet another quarter from his classmates, and gets the other quarter in the course of time.


छायामन्यस्य कुर्वन्ति तिष्ठन्ति स्वयमातपे ।
फलान्यपि परार्थाय वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषा इव ।।
Meaning: Tree stands in the sun and gives shade to others. Their fruits are also for others. Likewise, good people, bear all hardship and bring welfare to others. They give to others whatever they have earned.


त्यजेदेकं कुलस्यार्थें ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ।
ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ।।
Meaning: An indiscriminate individual must be kept away in the interest of the family. If it is in the interest of the village a family must be sacrificed. A village may be abandoned for the sake of the country. One must leave the world for self-realization.


वयमिह परितुष्टा वल्कलैस्त्वं दुकूलैः सम इह परितोषो निर्विशेषो विशेषः ।
स तु भवति दरिद्रो यस्य तृष्णा विशाला मनसि च परितुष्टे कोऽर्थवान् को दरिद्र ।।
Meaning: A Yogi says to a king that I am here in the hermitage contented with garments made of bark, while you are happy with your silken garments. Our contentment is the same. There is no difference whatever. He who has an abundant desire is poor. When there is contentment in the mind, who is rich and who is poor?


गुरुर्ब्रह्मा ग्रुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥
Meaning: गुरु ब्रह्मा है, गुरु विष्णु है, गुरु हि शंकर है; गुरु हि साक्षात् परब्रह्म है; उन सद्गुरु को प्रणाम ।


दुग्धेन धेनुः कुसुमेन वल्ली शीलेन भार्या कमलेन तोयम् ।
गुरुं विना भाति न चैव शिष्यः शमेन विद्या नगरी जनेन ॥
Meaning: जैसे दूध बगैर गाय, फूल बगैर लता, शील बगैर भार्या, कमल बगैर जल, शम बगैर विद्या, और लोग बगैर नगर शोभा नहि देते, वैसे हि गुरु बिना शिष्य शोभा नहि


पठतो नास्ति मूर्खत्वं जपतो नास्ति पातकम्।
मौनिनः कलहो नास्ति न भयं चास्ति जाग्रतः॥

Meaning: पढनेवाले को मूर्खत्व नहीं आता; मन्त्र जपनेवाले को पातक नहीं लगता; मौन रहनेवाले का झगडा नहीं होता और जागृत रहनेवाले को भय नहीं होता।


श्री सरस्वत्यै नमः
हंसस्थां धवलां प्रियां बलवतीं वाग्दां शुभां ज्ञानदां
वीणाशंखसुमाल्यपुस्तककरां विद्यायशस्सम्प्रदाम्।
मौढ्यघ्नाञ्च शुभोज्वलां गुणभरां हृत्पुण्डरीकस्थितां
नौमि प्रीतिकरां हृदा भगवतीं देवीं शुभां शारदाम्।।

Meaning: जो हंस पर विराजमान हैं जो धवल हैं जो बलवती हैं जो कल्याणस्वरूपा हैं जो विद्यार्थियों को ज्ञान प्रदान करती हैं। जिनके हांथ में वीणा शंख पुस्तक एवं माला है, जो सदा भक्तों को विद्या एवं यश प्रदान करती हैं। जो मूढता का नाश करती हैं जो शुभोज्वल हैं जो गुणों के खान हैं जो मेरे हृदय कमल में सदा निवास करती हैं, सबको स्नेह प्रदान करने वाली उस देवी भगवती शारदा सरस्वती माँ के श्री चरणों में मैं सादर नमन करता हूँ।
