A model is a simplified representation or abstraction of a system, concept, or phenomenon around us. It is used to analyze, understand, predict, or simulate real-world behavior. Models can take many forms, depending on the context in which they are used. For example you also say that I have created a Data Model, Functional Model, UI Model, Simulation Model etc.

Models can be classified in various ways based on their purpose, structure, and the domains they serve. Each classification helps in understanding the application, functioning, and scope of these models. In this article we are diving into categories or buckets in which we can place these models.

A model can be an AI Model or non-AI model. The diversity in AI model types reflects the expansive scope of artificial intelligence. From solving domain-specific challenges to providing generalizable solutions, these models showcase the flexibility of AI technologies in addressing a wide range of problems. Understanding these classifications helps researchers, developers, and businesses select the right model type for their specific needs. These classifications highlight even more nuanced ways to think about AI models, depending on factors like adaptability, fairness, ethics, or human interaction.

Based on your need you ask yourself which kind of model you need. If you are working on some software solution and you need AI model then based on your business requirment you need to ask yourself which model you need for your agentic work or the product which you are building. New age AI models, (after 2020), often called LLM are very powerful and capable and they have multiple features and capabilities. Keep in mind that these classification of models is not exclusive.

1. Reasoning ModelsPermalink

  • Model-Based Reasoning: These models utilize a pre-defined understanding of the physical world to make inferences or predictions. They are frequently used in expert systems, where a structured model derives logical conclusions from observed data. Example applications include diagnostic systems and simulation-based decision-making tools.

  • Classification Models: These models are designed to categorize data into predefined classes based on input features. Classification tasks can be further subdivided into:
    • Binary Classification: Predicts one of two outcomes (e.g., spam vs. not spam, pass vs. fail).
    • Multiclass Classification: Predicts one of multiple possible outcomes (e.g., identifying plant species, categorizing news articles).
    • Multilabel Classification: A news article can be classified as bollywood, entertainment, romantic etc.
  • Regression Models: Unlike classification, regression models predict continuous outcomes based on input variables. Examples include predicting stock prices, weather forecasts, or real estate valuations.

  • Theoretical Models: Based on well-established theories and equations, these models are primarily used in domains like physics, chemistry, and economics.
  • Empirical Models: Developed purely from observed data without relying on underlying theoretical frameworks. They are highly adaptable but may lack generalizability.
  • Semi-Empirical Models: Combine empirical data with theoretical insights to provide a balanced approach, offering both accuracy and interpretability.

  • Supervised Learning: Requires labeled input-output pairs for training. It is widely used for tasks like image recognition (classification) and sales prediction (regression).
  • Unsupervised Learning: Works with unlabeled data to identify patterns, clusters, or associations. Examples include customer segmentation and anomaly detection.
  • Reinforcement Learning: Focuses on decision-making by training agents to take actions in an environment to maximize cumulative rewards. Applications include robotics, game playing, and autonomous driving.

  • Business Process Models: Represent workflows and organizational behavior, often used in enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain optimization.

Common in diagnostics, these models help in identifying faults or predicting failures in mechanical systems or networks. Like anomaly detection, these models are widely used in health care, manufacturing, and finance.
